Yes, it is Bruce's vision and commitment (and NOBODY, nowhere, conveys pure commitment in their performance like Bruce Springsteen does) that's out front leading the way, but the E Street Band is a magnificent machine: the sheer virtuosity of Nils Lofgren and Roy Bittan; That's what hurt the Human Touch tour. It's not that they were bad musicians. They just lacked the empathy and understanding that he has with the ESB. Obviously, he realized that as well.
